Class attached to Recon/Heavy Attack Squadron Seven (RVAH-7)on board the USS
Constellation (1969-70) and the USS Kitty Hawk (1972)on Yankee station in the
Tonkin Gulf. Mike was an aircraft maintenance "green shirt" working on the
flight deck of those Aircraft Carriers. RVAH-7 was awarded the Meritorious Unit
Citation for missions flown while on the USS Constellation. Proud recipient of
the VietNam Service Medal with three campaign stars. Historian of Clan Dunlop.

Class in 5th Division aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS Ranger. Alan served on two
9 month cruises off the coast of Vietnam in 1964-65 and 1965-66. He was awarded
the Armed Forces Expeditionary medal (could be traded in for Vietnam Service
medal). The USS Ranger won the Navy Unit Commendation for its actions while Alan
was onboard.

Richard Dunlap, Charlie 229th AHB. 1969, 1970
Lt. Col John (Jack) E Delap A U-2 Pilot and
WWII and Vietnam vet, Jack planned and flew missions as Mission Planner and
Chief of Navigation for the original training cadre of U-2 spy planes out of
Groom Lake in Nevada, also called Area 51. He flew over the Republic of China
and the USSR. He had won the DFC with Oak cluster, Bronze Star, Air medal (5),
and many more.

Missing in Action
Commander Thomas E. Dunlop (on right)
The Carrier Air Group 15 commander flying with Attack Squadron 22 when it
departed on its 1972 cruise on the Carrier USS Coral Sea was CDR Thomas E.
Dunlop, an A7 pilot. Early in May, Dunlop launched on a mission over Quang Binh
Province. When he was about 5 miles south of the city of Dong Hoi, North
Vietnam, Dunlop's aircraft was hit by a surface-to-air missile (SAM) and he was
forced to eject. His remains were recovered in 2004 and he is now buried at
Arlington.

commander; then W2 William C. "Bill" Dunlap, pilot; SP5 William D. Sanderlin, crew chief; and SP5 Michael H. Shanley, Jr.,
door gunner; comprised the crew of the #2 UH1B Huey gunship (serial #64-13959)
in a flight of two conducting a night ground support mission for a long range
reconnaissance patrol (LRRP) that was engaged in combat with enemy forces and
had radioed for assistance. On 23
January 1989, the Socialist Republic of Vietnam repatriated 25 sets of remains
to the US control. Four of those sets of remains were identified on 20 April
1990 as being the crew of this aircraft. Of these four, Bill Dunlap and William Sanderlin were positively identified through dental comparison.
Remembered by a comrade, J. Kent Swicegood,
who wore his name on an MIA wristband until Bill's remains were finally
recovered in February 1990. read Bill's story here:

wrote for the memory of Bill Dunlap. Kent still wears the wristband with Bill
Dunlap's name on it today.
The Black wall looms above our heads,
it's length a cry of pain;
for thousands of our finest,
who'll not see their homes again.
So quietly come contemplate
and seek a Name up there;
graven 'mongst the multitude...
then kneel and say a prayer;
That those who're unaccounted-for
shall be brought home again
to lie beside their brothers,
or walk this hallowed land.
Their names upon the wall cry out,
the shame...they're left alone,
abandoned by the flag they served;
mere words cannot atone;
for brother, sons, and fathers
whose fate is still unknown.
This black band that's around my wrist,
does to the world attest,
that we demand each one of them,
the bravest and the best,
must be brought back to satisfy
the aching in our breast...
To soothe waves of uncertainty,
to end their family's quest...
To put aside the Nation's guilt,
and ease them to their rest.
Another war , more popular,
made heroes of the ones
who went and fought,
and then returned...
their job not left undone.
Let victory's retrospect invoke
those other men-at-arms
who fought, and died
and disappeared...
their battles not so charmed.
They're missing,
not forgotten...
and the band upon my arm;
cries out aloud that truth be told,
that lies no longer charm.
or send us back...
their fate for God's sake tell.
For death in combat's grim enough,
but MIA is Hell.
